6th Grade English & S.S. Info.

Welcome to the 2019 - 2020 school year!  This is going to be a very jam-packed year filled with fun activities,  exciting projects and a lot of learning.  I am very much looking forward to getting the school year started and making it the best year yet!

In English, our course of study follows the Common Core State Standards for sixth grade. We will be learning all about different forms of writing of varying lengths, such as complete paragraphs, argumentative essays, narratives, short stories, and many more.  We will also closely read, discuss and enjoy countless pieces of literature, articles, historical texts and various forms of media. In addition, we will cover grammar, poetry, and work on improving our listening and speaking skills.

In S.S. this year, we will be learning about many ancient civilizations that existed all over the world.  We will start with the Early Humans, continue to Mesopotamia, then on to Israel, Egypt, Greece, Rome, China and India.  When we start exploring these ancient civilizations, we will delve into some very exciting projects.  Get ready to have a ton of fun!

I know there will be a lot of questions about what materials are required for my classes.  For English and S.S. this year, students will be required to have the following materials with them daily:
  • Spiral notebooks (ONE for English for each trimester and ONE for S.S.)
  • Colored pencils, markers OR crayons
  • Glue sticks
  • Pens (blue or black for work AND colored to correct)
  • Highlighters
  • A ruler
  • Scissors
  • Pencils
  • An independent reading book (it is English, after all!)
Some other materials that students may want to have (but are not required) are:
  • Tape
  • A personal stapler
  • A personal pencil sharpener
